Information for first-year students in winter semester 2021/22

We would like to warmly welcome you to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology!

What is special this semester?

Due to current events, the winter semester 2020/21 cannot take place in presence again. The institutes and chairs have made a wide range of online services available for this purpose. Detailed information about the course and what to expect there can be found on RWTH Moodle.

In order to make the start of your studies as smooth as possible, the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology Student Council has set up an extensive freshman introductory week, which will also mainly take place digitally and - if possible - with presence parts. In addition, a Discord Server will provide the opportunity to network and exchange information with fellow students beyond the introductory week.

Please feel free to familiarize yourself with our faculty online and contact our contact points if you feel overwhelmed or have difficulties with digital studies.

Important information for students in winstersemester 2021/22

Realization of online events

The online courses are transmitted via video using Zoom. It is not necessary to set up a separate account at Zoom for this purpose. Invitations to Zoom events with the corresponding access links are provided via RWTH Moodle.

Please make sure that your microphone is muted when entering the Zoom room. Of course you can unmute the microphone if you want to speak yourself. Before you do so, however, you should "raise your digital hand" and wait until the lecturer calls you. "Raise hand" is a function of Zoom, which is represented by a blue hand symbol in the participant list.

Please also note the legal information which should be observed when using the Zoom video conference system in teaching.

Communication and exchange

Various platforms and possibilities are available for online teaching and exchange among students:

The learning platform RWTH-Moodle enables the creation of virtual course rooms for different courses. Here you will find all relevant materials for courses and discussion forums for open questions. In a Moodle learning room created especially for first semester students, you will find important and binding information about your studies at our faculty, documents and a first semester support service. Your TIM identification serves as your login.

On the discord server provided by the student council you can exchange information with your fellow students and communicate across tutorials. The Moodle learning room also provides a link to the interactive platform "Wonder", where the one or other online events will take place.

The video conference tool Zoom allows you to get together in learning groups. As a student of the RWTH you can apply for a free zoom license via the university.

Online winter semester 2021/22 - do I have to be on site?

The decision whether a course is offered in presence or online or hybrid is up to the lecturers. Please check in RWTHmoodle before the beginning of the semester which courses are held in attendance. These are especially events with less than 200 participants (possibly small group exercises, internships, projects, etc. depending on the risk situation). An overview of general regulations in events can be found in the RWTH event overview.

Even virtual lectures have very real exams, which are almost completely in attendance. Written exams are written in lecture halls of the RWTH and oral exams also take place mainly in rooms of the RWTH.

What kind of support is available for orientation for freshmen?

Please participate in the introduction week. There you will receive all the necessary information and the tutor groups will be divided up. These groups will be lead by students of higher semesters, which will give you a personal contact person. In addition to information about the program, there will also be a general introduction to RWTH and Aachen University. There will be special information for freshmen in RWTHmoodle.

In case of uncertainties and difficulties regarding the digital semester, the faculty will also be available to advise you. The staff of the  contact points at our faculty and at RWTHmoodle will be happy to help you.

Studying alone in the first semester is a challenge. How can I communicate with other students?

During the introductory week, groups of tutors will be formed and you will get to know some of your fellow students personally. If possible, take part in all classroom sessions.
The student council provides a discord server, which allows you to communicate with other students in a casual way and organizes events where you can meet fellow students across the tutorials.

How do I know which measures are up-to-date?

Please inform yourself independently and regularly on the corresponding websites, read your e-mails, get informed in RWTHmoodle and most importantly, keep in touch with your fellow students.

Do not hesitate to contact your lecturers or the faculty's advisory offices if you have any uncertainties or difficulties regarding the online semester.

Please check the RWTH Aachen University website or the RWTH Corona Blog regularly for current changes.
