The industrial internship in the Master's program Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Engineering has to be registered at the Internship Office. All formal issues can be treated there. Issues concerning completion can be answered by the Departmental Academic Advising. Please read our FAQs.

After completing your internship, you have to submit your certificate and your internship report to the Internship Office. The evaluation and the crediting of the report will take place at the Chair of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, at which the seminar for the internship should also be held.

The current examination regulation contains the guidelines relevant for the internship.

FAQ

Must the internship be registered at the faculty?

In order to ensure that the general conditions of the industrial internship comply with the guidelines of the faculty, it is necessary to submit a statement from the supervising company or institution to the Office for Industrial Internships when registering the intended professional internship. For this purpose, the student and the company or institution will expediently fill out the form which is available at the Internship Office:

Please note that the registration for the internship cannot be accessed on RWTHonline. You will receive a confirmation of the registration for the internship from the Office for Industrial Internships.

Can I access the registration for the industrial internship in RWTHonline?

No, the registration for the internship cannot be accessed on RWTHonline. You will receive a confirmation of the registration for the industrial internship from the Office for Industrial Internships.

How many weeks does the internship have to cover?

The recognized industrial internship must total at least 18 weeks and is to be completed during the master's program (scheduled for the 3rd semester). As a rule, it is to be completed in one continuous period. If, by way of exception, the practical work experience is carried out in sections, it should be noted that the work in a company must be at least four continuous weeks. Hourly or daily employment (part-time work) does not correspond to the purpose of the practical vocational activity and can therefore not be recognized.

Days missed from work (vacation, illness, other days off, but not public holidays) must be compensated for.

Where can I get a certificate of the mandatory internship?

Please request the certificate of mandatory internship directly by mail from the corresponding internship office, stating your degree program and matriculation number.

Which companies are suitable for the internship?

The knowledge and experience to be gained in the practical work experience can be acquired primarily in medium-sized and large industrial companies, in technology companies with an orientation towards system development or industry-related research institutions. Furthermore, companies such as power plants, public authorities, institutions and also start-up companies can be considered, provided that they can guarantee engineering supervision of the professional practical activity.

Not eligible are

  •     Small companies without development or system orientation
  •     Craft businesses
  •     internships at colleges and universities
  •     own or parental business.

The Internship Office of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology does not arrange internships, but it advises on the suitability of internships in terms of these guidelines.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology organizes an annual company fair on the Day of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. You are cordially invited to use this opportunity to establish contacts with future employers for internships.

Which issues can the internship include?

Practical activities include engineering-related tasks in the field of electrical engineering and information technology in the following areas:

  • manufacturing, installation, operation, maintenance, inspection, commissioning and/or
  • research, development, planning, calculation, construction and integration of hardware and software components or systems

The activities should be related to courses already attended in the master's program.

Is mere software development acceptable as part of the internship?

Administrative activities, domestic installations, repair of household radio and television sets for example are no engineering-related activities. Just like mere working on software without reference to electrical engineering, software-installations and programming courses do not count as practical activity during the internship.

Can the internship be done abroad?

Professional internships abroad are recommended and accepted if they meet the guidelines for professional internship (MSETITTI) in every respect.

The record book must be submitted in German or English. A certified translation must be added to the certificate, if it has been issued in a language other than German or English

Information about internships abroad and possible financial support can be obtained from the International Office of RWTH Aachen University and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), among others.
Exceptions from these rules require prior consultation with the internship Office.

Will internships within the T.I.M.E. exchange program be recognized?

The practical activity required in exchange programs (e.g. T.I.M.E. double degree program) is governed by specific contractual arrangements of the partner universities. In this case please contact the Internship Office personally.

Is the Faculty's Internship Office in charge of finding internship placements for the students?

The Internship Office of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is not in charge of finding the internship placements, but it advises on the suitability of the companies in terms of the Guidelines for Professional Internships (MSETITTI).

We recommend checking the RWTH job board for internship vacancies.

The company fair on the Day of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, which takes place annually, can also be used to make valuable contacts with future employers for internships.

What documents must be submitted?

In addition to your internship report and your certificate of professional practical activity (internship certificate/internship reference), please also submit the supplementary sheet for the submission of the internship report. Send the documents via e-mail as one continuous PDF document to  . You can download the supplementary sheet here.

When does the internship report have to be submitted?

The internship documents must always be submitted no later than six months after the end of each practical activity at the Internship Office.

How must the reporting on the internship look like?

The internship report should initially contain a coherent description of the activities carried out and is supplemented by the experience gained during the work. A brief description of the company should also be included (industry, size, product range).
The description of the activities and experiences should be as detailed as necessary so that it is clear from the report that the author has carried out the specified work him/herself. In-house methods and processes, which may have to be treated confidentially, should be explained in such a global manner that no company secrets are affected.
Figures often save a long text. Third-party material must be marked as such. There should be one self-produced figure per week of internship. In addition to the coherent work report, the internship report must also contain bulleted lists of the work performed per workday, indicating the daily work time.

The work report and the daily enumerations must be confirmed by the supervisor in the company at the end of the practical activity.

The internship records must be submitted to the Internship Office for approval no later than six months after the end of the respective practical activity.

Please refer to the Guidelines for Professional Internship Activities (MSETITTI) for detailed information regarding the form of the internship report.

What information must the testimony of practical activity obtain?

In recognition of having completed practical training a testimony of the company  must be submitted. This testimony shall contain:

  • personal information (name, first name, birthday),
  • company, department and location,
  • time and duration of the internship,
  • topic of the task (when editing a project)
  • absent and vacation days, or the fact that no absent or vacation days occurred.

Which date does the credit "internship semester" bear?

The module "Internship Semester" bears the date of submission of the internship report after the industrial practical activity has been recognized by the Internship Office. The internship report is part of the credit and must be submitted in order for the module to be considered completed. The duration of the recognition process, on the other hand, is irrelevant, also because it cannot be influenced by the student.

Which organizations assist in finding internships?

IAESTE is an organization which lists trainee positions and also has a branch at the RWTH.
